Section 3: Project Needs and Tasks

For the project the group met with the lab manager Sergio to discuss the lab needs for the upcoming semester. For the lab, a Cisco routing simulator is needed that best emulates a real life router. Options presented to us after research were Packet Tracer and GNS 3. GNS 3 was the preferred one since it is well documented, works on both Linux and Windows OS, emulates Cisco IOS, and is easier to configure for multiple users.

The lab also needs a server with an operating system that supports GNS 3. The OS options for our group were Windows and Linux. The lab manager suggested for his workshop that a Linux operating system would be preferred. After that the group decided to use Ubuntu as the OS because of familiarity of it compared to the other versions of Linux.

The duties assigned for this project include research, hardware implementation, software configuration, and documentation. The research part required the team to find hardware and software to implement a virtual routing lab and document it. They also have to configure the software and document the procedures for installation and configuration.. This documentation is available to all students and everyone interested in a virtual routing lab.
