- For our team's next task, we installed XLITE on all the computers in room 110J for a student group to use in their Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) project. The goal was to help install XLITE soft phones so that calls can be made within the AT&T local area network using both soft phones and hard phones for communication.Inventory was also taken of the server racks in the server room of 110J. The diagram and inventory list can be viewed in the attached file below.
X-Lite
X-Lite is a VoIP (Voice over IP) program that makes a computer into a SIP (session initiation protocol) soft phone. The term soft phone designates the virtual phone interface Xlite provides to the user. SIP is a signaling protocol used for controlling voice video applications.[9] X-Lite is propriety freeware developed by Vancouver-based software company CounterPath. [10]
- Installation
Our role in this assignment was support only. Our team was responsible for installing the software on all the Windows XP computers in room 110J T1, and then configuring the software according to the VoIP team's specifications. After installing the program from an executable file provided by the VoIP team, the configuration files were altered in code to define a procedure for dialing another party.
- X-Lite Operation
The caller would dial and the receiver would ring for 20 seconds before hanging up. Furthermore, the files were also changed to allow a computer with X-Lite to call a hard phone in the AT&T lab or Sergio’s office. To set up the final parts of X-Lite each computer had to be assigned a service number within the program. This number was also input into the server software and the numbers were based on the same numbering assignment the computers already had. Finally, each computer was tested by calling another computer and seeing if the call went through.
